Young Lions of Zagreb Triumph in Vienna Against Stade Rugby Club Wien

Vienna, September 27, 2025 – The young squad of Rugby Club Zagreb traveled to the Austrian capital this weekend, where they played a friendly match against the home side, Stade Rugby Club Wien. Saturday morning began with excitement as the coach decided to throw the club’s youngest talents into the action — six U-18 players were included in the starting lineup.
From the very start, the Zagreb team displayed determination and energy. The young lineup came out aggressively, seizing every opportunity to pressure the hosts. In the first half, they built a substantial lead, and although Stade Wien tried to respond several times, Zagreb’s solid defense kept them from crossing the try line.

Among the standouts was Mihael Jeleč, who led the attack with several impressive tries. His outstanding performance earned him the Man of the Match award from the opposing team, confirming his potential as a future senior rugby standout.
The rest of the young squad also showed maturity, courage, and promise. The coach’s plan to give them senior-level experience clearly paid off — the players performed with confidence, discipline, and great enthusiasm.

This match served as an ideal preparation for the continuation of the Croatian Championship, where Zagreb will face Makarska Riviera next weekend — a club returning to top-tier competition after a long absence. Giving the younger players game time and blending them into the senior squad was a key step toward that challenge.
After a job well done on the field, the traditional “third half” followed, as the Zagreb players socialized with their Viennese hosts before spending the night in the city. There was plenty of laughter and camaraderie — and even time for a cultural visit to the World War I Museum, making the trip an unforgettable experience.

Rugby Club Zagreb can take great pride in its young talents. They’ve proven they have the skill and courage needed for senior rugby, and this victory in Vienna will surely give them extra momentum heading into the rest of the domestic season.
Congratulations to the players and coaching staff — Zagreb is ready for the challenges ahead!
